In 2006, with rising fuel costs and concern with the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on our environment, ProResp set out with a goal to operate a greener fleet, reducing the company’s impact on the environment and ultimately helping our clients, staff and our community breathe easier by reducing our carbon footprint. 

ProResp began by switching over its truck fleet to Hino’s, a truck company owned by Toyota Motor Company. Toyota and Hino are leaders in advanced engine and emission control technologies. Hino trucks meet the most stringent emissions standards, and have the lowest particulate matter, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide emissions of any similar size trucks on the road today. By converting the fleet, ProResp has realized a more than a 20% reduction in fuel consumption over our previous vehicles, and saves over 100 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year. Also in 2006, ProResp moved away from larger, heavy duty pickup trucks in favour of more economical cargo vans, including the Dodge Sprinter. The Sprinters’ maneuverability, combined with excellent fuel economy and low emissions from the turbo diesel engine make it a prime choice for urban deliveries, reducing smog and urban congestion.

The move to cargo vans has also resulted in more than a 20% reduction in fuel consumption, and is saving over 50 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year. In 2008, looking to actively reduce fuel consumption and emissions in our professional vehicle fleet, ProResp reviewed a number of vehicles looking for a greener alternative to the traditional minivan, including available hybrid vehicles.

The Mazda 5 was chosen as the vehicle that met our requirements. The Mazda 5 was voted to be the most fuel efficient vehicle in its class by Natural Resources Canada, and won a 2009 ecoEnergy award. By converting our fleet, fuel consumption can be slashed 25% per vehicle, and we can save over 77 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year, once the entire fleet is converted. In all, these initiatives are result in overall fuel consumption savings of 24%, and save tens of thousands of litres of fuel annually.
