Not many people get a second chance at life, but that is exactly what happened to Benny. And he is determined to make the most of it.
Benny was diagnosed with interstitial lung disease in 2020 and started on home oxygen therapy. “At first I only needed it at a low rate to help me sleep through the night,” Benny told us. “But over time my condition worsened and I needed it more and more.”
One day, his breathing got so bad that Benny had to be hospitalized. It was in hospital that he was introduced to ProResp. Pleased with his first impression, Benny decided to switch from his previous oxygen provider to ProResp.
“When I was released from hospital, somehow they beat me home. ProResp was already there waiting for me in the driveway,” recalled Benny. “They set me up with liquid oxygen, which was much better for meeting my needs, and the customer service levels were beyond anything I’d previously experienced,” added Benny.
With Benny’s condition worsening, he was added to the lung transplant waitlist. It was a tense time, but in November, 2023, he received a new set of lungs.
“I was supposed to be in hospital 8 weeks and I was out in ten days,” Benny beamed of his recovery. “I was wheeled in there in a wheelchair and I walked out on my own two feet with no tubes.”
Benny’s wife, Erica, was a rock of support for him. But so were his team at ProResp. “Elvis, Marianne, and Johnny were amazing,” Benny said of his ProResp team. “The whole team treated us like family. After my surgery, it was bittersweet. It was sad to say goodbye, but I was also so happy to have a new shot at life. I felt like a whole new person.”
Recently, when Benny was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, he knew just who to call. “When they told me I needed CPAP therapy, I immediately thought of ProResp,” Said Benny. “From day 1 it has helped me sleep better. The people at ProResp are just so knowledgeable and supportive. And my RT Dejane is one of my neighbours!”
Thanks, Benny, for making us part of your inspiring journey!
