In 2024, Shirley caught a bad flu and was suddenly unable to breathe. She was admitted to Trillium Health Partner’s Queensway hospital, where she was placed on oxygen therapy and monitored. As her condition improved, Shirley was diagnosed with COPD, which she had developed as a result of bronchitis and pneumonia.
“The doctors told me that when I went home, I would need home oxygen therapy, which I wasn’t too familiar with. But I met ProResp right there in the hospital,” Shirley recalled. “It made everything so easy and seamless. When I was released, everything was already arranged and the oxygen concentrator was already in my home. Someone was out the very next day to check on me and make sure I had everything I needed.”
Shirley struggled at first with the oxygen tanks, which she was using when she needed to leave the house.
“I have really bad arthritis and rely on a walker to get around, so lugging the bulky oxygen cylinders was difficult. I mentioned this to my ProResp team and within days they brought me a portable oxygen machine that is so much lighter and easier to go out of the house with,” Shirley told us.
More recently, Shirley was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. She worked with ProResp to fine tune her CPAP machine and is finally getting a good night’s rest after years of fitful sleeps.
